Academician Wang Jian'an's Team Brings China's DragonFly™ Mitral Valve System to Treat Patients in Russia
April 30, 2026
Academician Wang Jian'an's team performed transcatheter mitral valve repair with the self-developed DragonFly™ system on two critical patients in Russia.
On August 7, 2024, invited by the National Medical Research Center for Cardiology of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, the team led by Professor Wang Jian'an successfully performed Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) on two local critically ill patients with severe mitral regurgitation using the DragonFly™ system. Professor Wang Jian'an is a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of the National Key Laboratory of Vascular Implantable Devices, and Director of the Heart Center at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University (Zhejiang Second Hospital).
The instruments used in the surgeries were independently co-developed by the team of the National Key Laboratory of Vascular Implantable Devices, led by Academician Wang Jian'an, together with Hangzhou-based enterprises, fully demonstrating China's independent innovation strength in the field of interventional treatment for structural heart diseases.
Professor Imaev, an authoritative expert from the National Medical Research Center for Cardiology of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, praised the work highly: "The Zhejiang Second Hospital team is experienced and highly professional. The DragonFly™ Transcatheter Mitral Valve Clipping System, independently developed by Academician Wang Jian'an's team through the integration of medicine and engineering, can provide a better treatment approach for patients with severe mitral valve diseases. We look forward to its greater contributions to the development of global cardiology."
With a long history, the National Medical Research Center for Cardiology of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation is Russia's largest cardiology research institution and its largest cardiovascular interventional center, enjoying a high reputation in the field. It consists of the Institute of Clinical Cardiology and the Institute of Experimental Cardiology. The center has achieved remarkable results in cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, and diagnostic imaging, as well as in the treatment of myocardial infarction, hypertension, arrhythmia, heart failure, and lipoprotein disorders, making it one of the most important research institutions in the global cardiology field.
