## What is Nivolumab?
Nivolumab (brand name Opdivo) is a monoclonal antibody that belongs to the immune checkpoint inhibitor class, targeting the PD-1 receptor on T cells. By blocking PD-1, T cells are no longer "switched off" by PD-L1 signals from cancer cells, enabling them to recognise and destroy cancer cells more effectively.
## Common Indications
Nivolumab is used across many cancer types: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), melanoma, clear cell renal carcinoma, bladder cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), recurrent head-and-neck cancers and classical Hodgkin lymphoma.
## Role in Treatment in China
In China, immunotherapy including Nivolumab and other PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors has been incorporated into standard treatment protocols at major oncology centres such as HYGEIA and GoBroad. For eligible patients, this represents an advanced treatment option that can be combined with chemotherapy or radiation.
