The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University: A Trusted Healthcare Destination in Southwest China

February 19, 2026

A guide to the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University: its advanced imaging, world-class urology and breast departments, and why Chongqing suits medical travel.

The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University was founded in 1957 by experts who moved westward from the former Shanghai First Medical College (now the Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University). It has grown into a comprehensive Grade-A tertiary teaching hospital that integrates medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, prevention, health care, and foreign-related medical services. It enjoys a high reputation in Southwest China for its complete range of disciplines, strong technical strength, prominent specialty characteristics, and outstanding service capabilities.

Cutting-Edge Medical Equipment

The hospital houses over ¥2.5 billion worth of internationally advanced equipment, including a fourth-generation Da Vinci Surgical Robot and orthopedic surgical robots for precision surgery. Its PET-CT with an ultra-long axial field of view is the first in Western China (launched March 2025). This revolutionary device detects tumors as small as 3mm (the size of a sesame seed) in a 30-40 second full-body scan, with radiation doses 1/40 of conventional systems.

PET-MRI and PET-CT are advanced imaging devices that can detect diseases at an early stage with high precision, which is especially useful for cancer diagnosis and staging. SPECT-CT, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CT, the linear accelerator (LA), digital subtraction angiography (DSA), and a cyclotron also contribute to accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. This advanced equipment reflects the hospital's technical strength and provides a strong guarantee for accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment.

World-Class Specialty Departments

Urology: Established in 1957, it is one of Chongqing's largest urology centers and a regional hub for complex cases. It has 156 beds and six subspecialty groups (such as kidney transplantation, oncology, and stones). Advanced procedures include minimally invasive stone removal (for example, percutaneous nephrolithotomy for staghorn calculi), laparoscopic cancer surgeries (prostate, bladder, kidney), and urinary diversion and reconstruction after cystectomy. The team has 26 physicians (8 professors and 10 associate professors), many trained in the U.S., Europe, or Japan.

Breast and Thyroid Surgery: A national key clinical specialty (founded 1979) and the Chongqing Breast Cancer Center, it leads in breast reconstruction and thyroid innovation. Its pioneering work includes oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery and hidden-scar endoscopic resection for early breast cancer, immediate breast reconstruction (DIEP flap, implants), and minimally invasive thyroid surgery via areola or oral approaches (leaving no neck scar). Among its experts is Prof. Ren Guosheng, former chairman of the China Anti-Cancer Association Breast Cancer Committee, who specializes in early diagnosis and reconstruction.

Why Chongqing as a Medical Travel Destination?

Chongqing, an important city in China, has many advantages for medical tourism. First, as a national central city, Chongqing has a developed medical system. In addition to the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, there are many other well-known medical institutions that can provide a full range of medical services. Second, Chongqing is rich in traditional Chinese medicine resources. Patients can experience TCM therapies such as acupuncture, massage, and herbal medicine while receiving modern treatment, which helps promote overall physical recovery. Third, Chongqing is famous for its hot springs. The mineral-rich water helps relieve stress, improve sleep, and even assist in treating some chronic conditions such as skin diseases and arthritis. After medical treatment, patients can relax in the hot springs, which is good for physical and mental recovery.
