Flight Delay Criteria & Insurance Claim Guide in China

Flight Delay Criteria & Insurance Claim Guide in China

March 12, 2026

How flight delays are determined and how to claim delay insurance compensation in China.

1. How Delays Are Determined

According to CAAC (Civil Aviation Administration of China) regulations: A delay occurs when the actual departure time (when the aircraft doors close and wheel chocks are removed) is 15+ minutes behind schedule.

Official confirmation comes from airline notifications (airport displays, SMS, flight tracking apps).

2. How to Claim Delay Compensation

Auto-pay: If you purchased delay insurance with your ticket, claims are often processed automatically (typically for delays over 2 or 3+ hours).

Manual claim: Keep your boarding pass and delay certificate (issued by airline counters), then file via the insurer's app or website.

Quick notes:

Budget airlines may not qualify — check the terms when booking.

Most weather or air traffic delays are covered, but strikes are usually excluded.
