Understanding your doctor's instructions correctly

November 18, 2024

How to read prescriptions, test orders, and instructions to follow them well.

After a visit, you usually receive a prescription and some instructions. Understanding them correctly makes treatment effective and safe.

For a prescription, note the drug name, dose, frequency, and timing. If the handwriting is hard to read, ask the pharmacist or doctor to clarify.

For test orders, ask what preparation is needed, such as fasting or drinking water. This affects the accuracy of results.

Ask clearly when to return for the results. Do not stop or change medication without consulting your doctor.
