Guangzhou Concord Cancer Center (广州泰和肿瘤医院) houses the first and only Varian ProBeam proton therapy system in South China. Bringing it into operation marked a turning point as the region officially entered the era of proton cancer treatment.
In 2024, the proton equipment license was approved by the national health authority, clearing the way for the center to deliver services. This is a near-exclusive advantage, because proton therapy demands enormous investment and specialized infrastructure that very few facilities in the region can meet.
Why Proton Is a Major Advantage
Proton therapy differs fundamentally from conventional X-ray radiotherapy thanks to the Bragg peak effect:
- Protons release most of their energy exactly at the tumor's depth, then stop.
- There is almost no exit dose beyond the tumor.
- Sharply reduced radiation to healthy tissue and nearby sensitive organs.
- Especially valuable for tumors near critical organs and for childhood cancers.
A Modern Technical Configuration

- Pencil beam scanning for intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT).
